Friday night’s Michigan State vs Tulsa game has been on the radar for quite some time, but will the Spartans take care of business?

With the 2019 season finally upon us, Michigan State opens the year with a home bout against a Tulsa squad that went just 3-9 last season.

While Michigan State fans know all too well that 3-9 seasons can be overcome the following year, the Golden Hurricane don’t have the same elite defense or firepower that the 2017 Spartans had when they won 10 games after a three-win campaign.

Brian Lewerke is back and claims he is 100 percent after injuring his shoulder last year and he’ll be joined by Cody White, Matt Dotson, a loaded backfield which has the talent but not so much experience in a new-look offense led by Brad Salem. Can the new offensive coordinator turn things around for the Spartans and get them to top-50 status nationally?

The defense should have its way with Tulsa which was mediocre, at best, last season and still doesn’t know who it’ll stay with at quarterback — Seth Boomer or Baylor transfer Zach Smith.

Tulsa’s backfield will be the strength on offense with two potential 1,000-yard rushers in Shamari Brooks and Corey Taylor II but Michigan State’s run defense is, well, elite. That’ll be a battle of strength vs. strength.

The Spartans will look to start the season strong and avoid an early letdown — like the one they almost suffered last season as the hands of Utah State.
