Matt Costello spent the past few years with the Spurs, but the former Michigan State basketball star is on the Pistons’ Summer League team.

The NBA career of Matt Costello has been a relatively quiet one, but when he got to Michigan State as a freshman, no one expected him to make it to the league.

Why? He was too much of a tweener and didn’t have a jump shot that NBA teams look for. He finished his career, though, as an excellent rebounder and finisher in the paint. He brought the same intensity night after night and became a fan favorite in East Lansing.

Costello ended up signing a day as an undrafted free agent with the Hawks before getting a run as a two-way player with the Spurs. He played in four career games and averaged 1.0 points and 2.3 rebounds.

Now he’s getting a chance with his home state team, the Detroit Pistons.

Joining Costello on the Pistons’ Summer League roster is Matt McQuaid who signed a deal with Detroit after being an undrafted free agent. They will both be hoping for a spot on the active roster this fall, but they’re going to face an uphill battle during the summer.

Costello has a chance to impress because he knows what it takes to make an NBA roster and earn even a two-way deal and having him around will aid McQuaid’s progression, too.

The Pistons may not have many household names on their Summer League roster, but they’re going to be fun to watch because of the Michigan State connection. Their first game is Friday, July 5, against Croatia.
