Michigan State Football: Trenton Gillison could be just what offense needs
Trenton Gillison has all the tools necessary to become a star in Michigan State football’s offense in 2019, but can he seize the opportunity?
Mark Dantonio had to be jumping for joy when Trenton Gillison committed to Michigan State back in the 2018 class. He was one of the top tight ends in the entire class and he possessed all the tools to make him a star at the next level.
When he did sign with Michigan State, the plan was to play both football and baseball, but he decided to cut the latter and focus on the former.
But in year one, Gillison didn’t record any stats, playing in just two games with 14 total snaps. He preserved his redshirt, which is the perfect scenario since Matt Dotson is entering his junior season and should be the starting tight end for Michigan State in 2019.
Dotson could be one of the better tight ends in the Big Ten if he realizes his potential, but Gillison could be just what the offense needs — a complementary field-stretching tight end. He’s an athletic 6-foot-4, 267-pound tight end with great hands, a big body and he runs great routes for his size.
The Spartans need more weapons to take the pressure off Brian Lewerke who had a mediocre 2018 season and if he can start targeting his tight ends more, the Michigan State offense will take a complete 180 turn for the better.
Gillison could be just what this offense needs and there’s incredible potential with Dotson as the No. 1 tight end and a rising star in the redshirt freshman as the No. 2.
