Michigan State Football: What’s going on with LJ Scott?
Just days after signing with the Browns, former Michigan State football running back LJ Scott has decided to step away from the sport.
When LJ Scott decided to play in the Redbox Bowl and burn his final opportunity for a redshirt and another year of eligibility, it seemed like he had a plan.
The Michigan State running back had a roller-coaster career which saw plenty of ups, but ended on some major downs after suffering injuries that derailed his senior season. He finished as one of the top rushers in school history, but he never reached his full potential, which hurt to see.
Still, he had hope that an NFL team would take a chance on him in the NFL draft, but he went seven rounds over three days without hearing his name called.
Then the Baltimore Ravens decided to sign him as an undrafted free agent, inviting him to rookie minicamp. He was cut loose shortly after and the hometown Cleveland Browns decided to scoop him up, hoping they’d get a steal in the undrafted free agent market. He spent a couple of days with Cleveland before reportedly walking away from the franchise, contemplating his future.
So what’s going on with LJ?
It seems like a classic case of a kid who has had to fight his whole career for respect and may have spent all his time trying to please others while not really focusing on himself.
Sure, he’s one of the most naturally-talented athletes who has come through Michigan State in quite some time and he’s even drawn some favorable comparisons to Le’Veon Bell, but maybe he lost the love for the game. He had a nightmare 2018 season which capped off a curious career that saw him break out as a freshman, nearly hit 1,000 yards as a sophomore, take a step back as a junior and barely make an impact as a senior.
Whatever the case may be, we have to respect it. Clearly Scott is going through some stuff if he’s mulling his football future and if the draw of playing for the hometown Browns isn’t quite enough to keep him around the game. He’s finally doing something for himself, and that’s a start.
