Michigan State Football: Khari Willis officially signs rookie deal with Colts
Former Michigan State football safety Khari Willis has officially signed his rookie deal with the Indianapolis Colts just two weeks after being drafted.
When Khari Willis came to Michigan State as a three-star athlete, there was some debate about which position fit him the best. He played running back in high school, but he had the perfect body type for a collegiate safety, so he made the transition to full-time defense.
Four years later and Willis became one of the best safeties to ever suit up for Mark Dantonio, recording 196 total tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks, 20 pass breakups and four picks.
The aggressive safety’s best season came in 2018 when he was named a team captain and helped lead one of the best defenses in the nation. He finished with 84 tackles, 10 pass breakups and two interceptions, earning himself third-team All-Big Ten honors — which seemed like a snub.
Although there were some doubts about his coverage skills heading into the NFL draft, experts like Mel Kiper Jr. raved about him and said that he could even be a second-round pick.
The Colts ended up selecting him No. 109 overall in the fourth round and they officially signed him to his rookie contract on Monday, making him the seventh of the 10 draft picks by Indianapolis to reach a deal.
Indianapolis really likes what Willis brings to the table and they feel he can help the growth of the Colts’ secondary and become a leader on and off the field.
Michigan State’s secondary will surely miss Willis but he’s moving on to bigger and better things and you can bet success will follow him to the NFL.
