There is a vacancy at Michigan State football heading into 2019. Can Cam Chambers step up and ease the pain of losing Felton Davis III?

Cam Chambers, a redshirt junior who stands 6-foot-2 and 219 pounds, posses the build to be the No. 1 target for Michigan State.

The New Jersey product held offers the likes of Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, Florida, Wisconsin and many more out of high school — he was a much-heralded recruit and enrolled early.

After taking a redshirt in 2016, Chambers was down on the depth chart until MSU had many wide receiver transfers. Again, there was much talk about Chambers’ potential to get playing time after 2017 season. Nevertheless, Chambers once again found himself buried on the depth chart until a rash of injuries thrust him into the lineup. He had 19 catches for 264 yards, however, a hand injury held him out of a few games.

Chambers has the ability and talent and now with the departure of Felton Davis III, the opportunity is there for Chambers to step into a major role with this offense.

Sophomore wide receiver Cody White is also coming off a hand injury and senior Darrell Stewart Jr. looked sharp in the Green-White Game but there’s a spot for Chambers if he wants it.

Freshman Tre Mosley will be pushing Chambers for playing time as well as junior Laress Nelson and sophomore Jalen Nailor. The latter seems to be the odds-on favorite to step up as the next big receiver target, however, the MSU coaching staff is going to be using him all over the field in different positions attempting to get the pigskin in his hands as often as possible. He also had a difficult time staying healthy last season. He has packed on more muscle and that could help.

I’ve written much about Chambers and his ability (I do think highly of him). However, there is a possibility that if he doesn’t make a move on the depth chart in fall camp that he may never live up to all the fanfare he received out of high school. This upcoming camp will be an important one for him. He certainly has the talent to be the next star at MSU.
