Michigan State Football: Chiefs sign Felton Davis III as undrafted free agent
Former Michigan State football star Felton Davis III surprisingly went undrafted but was signed shortly after by the Kansas City Chiefs.
If you’ve watched Felton Davis III throughout his career, you’d have to be impressed with his growth as a player and also a person. Heading into the 2018 season, he was pegged as a potential Day 2 or early-Day 3 NFL draft selection, but tearing his Achilles against Michigan wiped that out.
As the time wound down on the 2019 NFL Draft process, Davis III had yet to hear his name called and that was a shock to everyone who saw what he’s capable of, when healthy.
Did the Achilles injury really scare 32 NFL teams to the point of leaving him undrafted throughout the seven rounds? It sure seems that way.
But the Chiefs have taken a chance in undrafted free agency, signing the former Spartan to a deal.
Throughout the whole process, though, Davis III worked his tail off and even though he didn’t get to partake in pre-draft workouts because he’s still rehabbing that injury, he’s been keeping the right mindset. He knows that this isn’t the end of his NFL hopes, but the beginning.
Teams would have salivated over the 6-4 receiver after his senior season had he remained healthy and finished with 1,000 yards — the pace he was on before that Michigan game.
Michigan State, too, would have benefitted greatly from him staying healthy and they probably would have won a couple more games, but that’s not how things work. He now has to get back to work and prove that the injury isn’t going to derail his career and keep all his goals in front of him.
The Chiefs have Mecole Hardman who they drafted early on but bringing in Felton could be one of the more underrated moves. He would have been a late-round steal, but the Chiefs made an undrafted free agent robbery.
