A No. 1 seed is on the line, presumably, during Sunday’s Michigan State basketball versus Michigan rematch, but why should the Spartans get it?

There may be few people in Michigan State’s corner on Selection Sunday when it comes to deciding who deserves the four No. 1 seeds, but the Spartans have done almost everything they can to earn one.

Yes, Michigan State has two inexcusable losses to Indiana and one to Illinois on the road, but he has victories over Michigan (twice) and Wisconsin (twice) with a Big Ten regular season title mixed in. If the Spartans can claim the Big Ten Tournament title on Sunday, a No. 1 seed should be a no-brainer.

Michigan State, in my mind, has done enough to earn that No. 1 seed, and here’s why.

5. End of year improvement

It’s been said that the selection committee looks at the entire body of work, but also improvement as the year progresses. For example, if you get hot at the end of the season, there’s a good chance your seeding will improve drastically.

Michigan State has improved as the season has gone on, following a three-game losing streak in the middle of Big Ten play by winning 10-of-11. It has beaten teams like Michigan and Wisconsin in that span, winning crucial road games in the process.

The selection committee has to be impressed with how the Spartans are firing on all cylinders when it matters most and that should lead to No. 1 seed consideration. Other potential No. 1 seeds like Duke and Gonzaga haven’t had the same consistency in the past few weeks.
