Michigan State Basketball: 5 takeaways for comfortable win over Nebraska
1. Saturday’s game could be biggest in rivalry’s history
Is this an exaggeration? Maybe, but tell me the last time that Michigan and Michigan State have ended the season with a matchup and it has decided the Big Ten title. It just doesn’t happen this perfectly and not even Hollywood could script a better ending to the season.
Heck, if Purdue loses at Northwestern earlier in the day on Saturday, this game’s intensity will rise about 100 notches because then the winner would be dubbed outright Big Ten regular season champion and not co-champ — the highest honor possible.
Only three times in the history of this rivalry have the Spartans and Wolverines met as top-10 teams, but one of those matchups happened just a couple of weeks ago in Ann Arbor. You could argue that the previous battle between these two rivals was the biggest in the history of the series, but this one has to top it, easily.
Everything is on the line. Pride, bragging rights and a chance to hoist a trophy. For Michigan State, it would be in front of the home crowd on Senior Day. For the Wolverines, it would be a chance to ruin Senior Day and pick up arguably John Beilein’s biggest regular season win — ever?
This game will go down as one of the most intense in recent memory and the state of Michigan will be absolutely rocking on Saturday.
