Michigan State Basketball: 5 takeaways from comeback win at Iowa
4. Matt McQuaid has ice in his veins
Though he didn’t have his best game, offense-wise, Matt McQuaid stuck with it. His shots weren’t falling through the first 20 minutes of the game, and then something clicked.
McQuaid stopped his passive play and began to take shots he was comfortable with, nailing three monstrous 3-pointers in the second half.
The senior captain’s first 3-point make was a big one, breaking a 50-50 tie with just under 13 minutes left in the game. His next was almost as crucial, extending a slim four-point Michigan State lead to seven after a Luka Garza layup.
Then, with just under eight minutes to go, he followed up yet another Garza layup with a 3-pointer in the corner to extend the lead to 14, effectively ending the game — this one even fired Tom Izzo up on the sideline.
An aggressive McQuaid is good for the team and he showed that he still has that clutch ability every now and then. This kid stuck with it and hit his shots when they mattered most.
