The 2018 Redbox Bowl doesn’t exactly top the list of most exciting games, but here’s why Oregon vs. Michigan State football should intrigue you.

It’s not what everyone was hoping for, but the 2018 Redbox Bowl is the next destination for Michigan State in postseason play.

Sure, it’s a far cry from the Rose Bowl or College Football Playoff, but the Spartans lost plenty of games of inches this season which was the difference between a 10-2 or 11-1 season and a 7-5 campaign. This matchup with Oregon is a chance to end the year on a high note and prove that the offense isn’t dead after all.

I know what you’re thinking, “It’s just the Redbox Bowl,” but why should we be excited about the New Year’s Eve matchup?

5. New Year’s Eve bowl in California

I get it, it’s not exactly the New Year’s Day bowl in Florida that everyone was begging for (looking at you, Outback Bowl) but it’s arguably the next-best thing.

When Michigan State’s potential bowl destinations arose, it looked like it would be either the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla., the Music City Bowl in Nashville or the Pinstripe Bowl in New York. The latter seemed to be the most likely, but no Spartan fan wanted to see a Dec. 27 bowl game in New York against an ACC team rather than a New Year’s Day bowl vs. the SEC.

Michigan State got a better deal than the Pinstripe Bowl, locking in the Redbox Bowl against an exciting opponent in Oregon out in San Francisco, Calif.

How can you not like this situation? Don’t forget the fact that there are plenty of alumni on the West Coast who will fill the seats.
