Michigan State’s 25 wishes list continues today and will run over the next three weeks. What is the No. 21 wish for all Spartan fans?

Here is wish No. 21 on our Michigan State fan wish list as we count down to wish No. 1.

Wish No. 21

Michigan State hockey wins the 54th annual Great Lakes Invitational on New Year’s Eve.

The Michigan State hockey team has had a roller coaster of a season. Lately, however, things have been looking up as the Spartans’ last loss was on Nov. 23 at Minnesota. The hockey team has some impressive wins this season sweeping No. 18 Cornell on the road, defeating No. 15 Michigan and winning the shootout against the Wolverines in their second game, winning at Minnesota, as well as victories against Northern Michigan and Ferris State.

However, the Spartans are 6-7-1 overall with a series on the road against Big Ten foe Wisconsin this weekend. Winning the GLI tournament would make a huge statement for the program moving forward under second year head coach, Danton Cole.

Michigan State’s last GLI title was back in 2009. They have had three straight fourth place finishes in the tournament. Michigan State has had success in the past in this tournament having won it four straight times from 1982-85 and most recently from 1997-2000.

Overall, having participated in the tournament 45 times, it has 12 titles and 14 second place finishes as a participant in the tournament. The Spartans look to win the tournament this year as the may not be the favorites, but there is no team in the tournament that is playing extremely well.

Little Caesars Arena should have a good number of fans present during the tournament as it has four teams from the state of Michigan participating in this year’s tournament.

Other than Michigan State and Michigan, Lake Superior State and Michigan Tech are participates in this year’s tournament. The Spartans have a good chance against all three teams. Michigan State opens up the tournament playing the second game against Lake Superior State. If the Spartans win, they will play the winner of Michigan and Michigan Tech on New Year’s Eve at 2:30 p.m. ET.

This wish coming true I would put at 55 percent but many would not be surprised if Michigan State were to lose to LSS in the opening round but it is indeed the holiday season and here is to wishing for a fantastic New Year’s Eve.
