The panic is strong within the fan base and it’s time to talk everyone down from the ledge. Here’s why Michigan State football fans need to remain optimistic.

If you read social media over the past week or two, you’d be darn near sure that Michigan State football was 0-2 with two blowout losses against inferior opponents.

That’s not the case.

Michigan State does have one loss in the first two weeks which came on the road against a tough Arizona State team, 16-13. The Spartans had the win in the bag heading into the fourth quarter but questionable coaching decisions cost them a road win in the desert and a 2-0 record.

Still, Michigan State has a win against a high-scoring Utah State team as well as plenty of talent on the roster and an top-10 head coach in the country, but people are quick to call this season a failure with 10 games remaining. The pessimism is strong within the fan base, and there’s no need for it just yet.

Why should Michigan State fans remain optimistic about the season’s outcome?

5. Season is extremely young

People seem to forget the Spartans have only played two games.

I get it, we can only judge a team on what they’ve given us, but it’s impossible to know what type of team Michigan State is without having them play more than eight quarters.

On one drive, the Spartans will look unstoppable and Brian Lewerke will look like a Heisman candidate and on the next, Dave Warner looks foolish and LJ Scott looks like a back desperate to gain 1-2 yards behind a shaky offensive line. Right now, it’s impossible to say “this team stinks” and mean it when we really don’t know what this team is yet.

Utah State proved to be a tough test and the Aggies may ultimately be a good team. They have won two straight blowouts, even hitting the 70-point mark, since the loss to Michigan State in East Lansing.

As for Arizona State, the Sun Devils seem to be better than expected despite a loss to San Diego State and they could contend for the Pac-12 South crown.

Don’t call a season ‘over’ before it ever truly started.
