Michigan State football’s drop in Week 2 AP Top 25 drastic, but deserved
Michigan State football suffered a drastic drop in the Week 2 AP Top 25 but it was deserved. Just how far did the Spartans fall?
As the ball was tipped into the air by Joe Bachie and back into his arms for an interception, you could hear the collective sigh of relief from around Spartan Nation. Michigan State avoided a massive upset at the hands of Utah State, opening the season with a 1-0 mark.

The No. 11 Spartans didn’t impress many, especially with their offensive line of defensive presence, but they won and that’s all that really matters.
Michigan State wondered just how far it would drop in the rankings after the 38-31 win over the high-tempo Utah State Aggies. Some, including myself, believed it would only be a spot or two, but the AP voters weren’t too kind, dropping the Spartans to No. 15, down four spots from the preseason poll.
Is this a drastic drop? Yes, but it’s warranted. Michigan State doesn’t deserve to rise in the rankings until it proves it’s worthy of contending with the big boys of college football.
Arizona State will be a good test for this team. If Michigan State can handle the Sun Devils in Tempe, the voters will come back in defense of the green and white.
For now, Michigan State has plenty of work to do and it starts with that offensive line and the defensive backfield/linebackers. Plus, getting a push on that defensive line wouldn’t hurt as Manny Wilkins shouldn’t get all the time in the world to throw the ball or choose to run.
Don’t panic, Spartan fans. A four-spot drop is justifiable and this team will come out and prove more in Week 2.
