Michigan State football opened its season with a tight win over Utah State. It’s time for some common overreactions from the outcome.

From the opening kickoff, Utah State played a heck of a game. Michigan State wasn’t expecting quite the battle it got from the Aggies, but the Spartans were able to make the plays down the stretch to avoid a mammoth upset in East Lansing.

Sure, everything almost unraveled before the Spartans’ eyes, but Mark Dantonio kept his team level-headed and Brian Lewerke led the final drive down the field to take the go-ahead score with under two minutes left and Joe Bachie shut the door with a game-clinching tip and interception.

The win didn’t stop people from overreacting, though. Fans were up in arms over the close victory and some even stated that they didn’t see this team finishing anywhere near the top of the Big Ten East standings.

It’s ‘Overreaction Monday’, so let’s take a look at five of the most common overreactions from Friday night’s tight win over Utah State.

5. Offensive line will be the downfall of this team

Man, the offensive line was dreadful. There was no push up front, the run game couldn’t get going and Brian Lewerke was running for his life on multiple occasions.

Still, it’s way too early to say that this part of the team will doom the Spartans in the long run.

I know, I know, the offensive line didn’t provide any reasons to be optimistic about its progression throughout the season, but Mark Dantonio knows what he has to work with and there’s plenty of depth up front and young pieces who might get a shot.

On top of that, Cole Chewins was out at left tackle, so that may have added pressure on guys like Tyler Higby, who moved around a lot, and Jordan Reid who hasn’t gotten much starting experience.

The offensive line will improve, but the opener should be a serious wake-up call.
