Felton Davis III looks the part of a future NFL star, but before that happens, he could join an exclusive club with Michigan State football.

Two of Mark Dantonio’s most successful teams at Michigan State have had a few things in common. One, the quarterback position is a major strength. Two, the defense is playing at an elite level. And three, there’s usually one receiver who stands out as an All-Big Ten talent.

Flash it back to the days of Kirk Cousins. Michigan State had a strong defense, Cousins was one of the best gunslingers in the nation and he had B.J. Cunningham at his disposal. Next, there was Connor Cook, a top-notch defense which ranked near the top of the country and he had Tony Lippett as his No. 1 one year and Aaron Burbridge the next.

Two of the wide outs above won the Big Ten Receiver of the Year award, and Felton Davis III has a chance to join that exclusive club and help lead the Spartans to a big season.

Davis III could give Brian Lewerke that same type of No. 1 target that both Cook and Cousins had and he may surpass the production of his predecessors.

Cunningham finished his senior season with 1,306 yards and 12 touchdowns, Lippett had 1,198 yards and 11 scores and Burbridge capped off his last year with 1,258 yards and seven touchdowns. Davis III had over 700 yards in a breakout junior season with nine touchdowns and he looks to be well on his way to joining the previous wide outs as the Big Ten’s best.

An exclusive club, indeed, Davis III has all the tools (height, strong hands, athleticism) to become a go-to target for Lewerke again and finish with 1,300-plus yards, topping any receiver of the Dantonio era.

Could Davis III become Dantonio’s best wide out? He may have as much, or more, talent than any receiver in the coach’s tenure. He’s a Big Ten Receiver of the Year award away from elite territory.
