The AP has listed Michigan State football’s Brian Lewerke as a dark-horse Heisman candidate. However, can he take the next step and become elite?

Spartan fans have bemoaned the play-calling of offensive coordinator Dave Warner for several seasons. Often times throughout the years, the offense appeared to be stagnant or boring. While fans are entitled to their opinions, Warner did have the Spartan offense clicking during the 2013 and 2014 campaigns. It should also be noted any criticism of Warner is reminiscent of Don Treadwell’s tenure at the same position.

While MSU enjoyed a bounce-back season in 2017, going 10-3 and flashed glimpses of an explosive offense, it still remains to be seen if they can put it together consistently on the field.

There were a few tough games in 2017 when Michigan State struggled to move the ball, but did enough to win the game like against Indiana and Iowa. One might chalk those games up to inexperience at several skill positions and a young offensive line, though.

Plays break down it is a simple fact in college football. However, it has been Brian Lewerke’s ability to create that MSU has relied heavily on — he appeared more comfortable out of the shotgun with four wideouts. Lewerke has all the tools and with an experienced offensive line, wide outs and running back, it appears this could be the year that he takes the next step.

However, can he do it? It still remains to be seen if he can do it on a consistent level game in and game out. He was the difference in the offense in 2017, but he also had his fair share of bad decisions. Some of which were due to him trying to do too much like the Northwestern game where he threw an interception to end the game in overtime.

It has been reported that Lewerke has been working on his deep ball, a weakness in 2017. Also team chemistry has been improved. It appears that he could be headed for an excellent season. However, he will have to prove it in order to have his name amongst the elites of college football. Michigan State needs him to step up big again in 2018.
