With the 2018 season finally upon us, what can we expect to see when Michigan State football takes the field? Here’s what the depth chart may look like.

Mark Dantonio has to feel confident about his roster heading into the 2018 season. Michigan State may have the most talented team during his tenure and, even better, the Spartans are still young.

Michigan State exceeded expectations with one of the nation’s youngest rosters a season ago, going from 3-9 in 2016 to 10-3 in 2017. A seven-game improvement with a young team has set the bar extremely high for the Spartans. National pundits are showing plenty of respect for Michigan State and it was even ranked No. 11 in the preseason AP Top 25.

The depth chart is starting to take shape through a few weeks of fall camp and the season is right around the corner. What will the starting lineups look like when the Spartans kick off against Utah State?

The Spartans don’t lack depth, making 2018 a potentially special season.

Offensive Line

Starting tackles: Cole Chewins (LT), Luke Campbell (RT)
Backups: Jordan Reid, AJ Arcuri

Luke Campbell and Cole Chewins started each game of the 2017 season as the tackle positions and it looked like Jordan Reid may push the latter for his left tackle job. However, Chewins has had a strong summer and fall camp and he’ll retain that starting job while Reid switches in with the ones regularly. Don’t sleep on AJ Arcuri to get some snaps as well.

Starting guards: Kevin Jarvis (LG), David Beedle (RG)
Backups: Tyler Higby, Matt Carrick

Kevin Jarvis is the name everyone is excited about. The former four-star recruit in the 2017 class had an impressive true freshman season and he’s back as a projected starter. He played well enough to move Tyler Higby to a backup spot and David Beedle will join him on the other side. Beedle was one of the more underrated linemen last season and will get his shot to shine as a senior. Higby will play the backup role along with Matt Carrick.

Starting center: Tyler Higby
Backup: Matt Allen

While Higby will be a backup at the guard spot, he’s projected to start at center. See, Mark Dantonio has still found a way to get his best guys on the field even if it’s not at their natural positions. Yet another Allen brother, Matt, will back Higby up, gearing up to eventually take the reins.
