Michigan State football is lacking experience at running back, but redshirt freshman Weston Bridges could be the backup the Spartans need.

One wrong step and just like that, it was over. Weston Bridges’ freshman season ended before it could even begin as he tore his ACL for a second time, halting any progression.

Michigan State had a crowded backfield anyway, so Bridges would have likely redshirted no matter what. Still, he was hoping to surprise some people and nudge his way into the playing rotation.

The former four-star recruit was looking at yet another rehab stint and after a long offseason, the redshirt freshman is looking like his old self again.

Mark Dantonio has been raving about the young running back, proving it’s time to be excited about him as the team’s potential No. 1 option as LJ Scott’s backup.

All the talk has been about Connor Heyward as Scott’s backup, but Bridges is clearly making an impression and being compared to Jeremy Langford is incredibly high praise. If he can be anything like Langford, the Spartans will be in luck. Imagine a backfield with an elusive Scott, powerful Heyward and speedy Bridges — flat-out scary.

Michigan State might just have another three-headed monster in the backfield even after losing Gerald Holmes and Madre London.

Heyward could be more of a powerful third-down back who could double as a receiver, at times, while Bridges could be a home-run threat who gives Scott a breather here and there. He could be setting himself up for a starting role in 2019.

Not even two torn ACLs can stop Bridges and his rise in fall camp has been refreshing for Michigan State coaches.
