While no one currently on the roster and potentially even both coaching staffs will be around then, it’s still a great move for both programs. Every college football fan wants to see two quality programs go at it in non-conference play, and that’s what this will be.
The news was announced on Monday afternoon.
The last time these two teams played was in 2015 and the Spartans got the better of the Ducks in East Lansing. The previous season, Oregon beat Michigan State in Eugene thanks to a big outing from Marcus Mariota, out-dueling Connor Cook.
The winner of both of those matchups went on to make the College Football Playoff. It’d be interesting to see that trend continue in 2029-30.
Michigan State fans have been begging for intriguing non-conference matchups now that Notre Dame is hit-or-miss on the schedule. The Spartans will get Arizona State in 2018 and 2019, Boise State in 2022 and 2023, Boston College in 2024-25 and Notre Dame in 2026-27.
The athletic department should be looking for more elite competition to schedule home-and-homes with — maybe even a team from the Big 12 or SEC.
Still, this has to make fans and future season ticket holders happy. We will have to wait 11 years for these games, but it’ll be worth it in the end.
