Josiah Scott went down with an injury in fall camp, but Michigan State football could be witnessing the rise of another star: Shakur Brown.

There’s something about injuries to starters in fall camp that instill fear and panic among a fan base despite immense depth on the roster. Such was the case when Mark Dantonio announced starting cornerback Josiah Scott went down with a non-contact injury and will miss up to two months.

However, no position group on the team in more loaded than the defensive backfield. When one goes down, the Spartans will just reload with another talented defensive back.

So who will replace Scott? He was a Freshman All-American and not exactly the easiest loss.

If you go by what players and coaches are saying, Josh Butler is a top option but Shakur Brown is the player everyone should be keeping an eye on.

Brown was one of the final players to commit to Michigan State’s 2017 recruiting class and the coaching staff was excited about the late haul. It hasn’t taken long for the redshirt freshman to make a name for himself as he’s been lighting it up in fall camp thus far.

With an opportunity presenting itself, it looks like we may see him rise on the depth chart and swipe the No. 1 job, after all.

Butler is a solid cornerback with a few years under his belt already, but Brown looks to have the talent and sky-high potential. He may just be another diamond in the rough that the coaching staff fished out at the last minute.

The momentum is favoring Brown right now, but don’t be surprised if Butler starts against Utah State. Both will likely be splitting No. 1 snaps this fall until Scott is healthy.
