Michigan State football suffered a big blow on Monday afternoon as Mark Dantonio announced Josiah Scott would miss two months.

Another year, another tough blow in the preseason. In just the second week of fall camp, starting cornerback, and former Freshman All-American, Josiah Scott went down with an injury.

Even worse, Mark Dantonio said it was a non-contact injury, which could be anything. Fortunately for the Spartans, he will be out about two months, so he will miss a third of the season if all goes well.

This raises the question: who will replace Scott at the corner spot opposite Justin Layne?

Following Tyson Smith’s retirement, the experience at the position isn’t vast, but an early favorite has to be junior Josh Butler. The Mesquite, Texas, native has all the tools to contend for a starting job and would likely be playing with the ones on most rosters in the Big Ten.

Outside of Butler, the Spartans have a plethora of young guns who have been impressing this summer and who could get their big breaks early on.

Redshirt freshman Shakur Brown was one of the last players to commit to the Spartans’ 2017 class and he was considered a major steal. His name has been tossed around a lot this offseason as someone who has taken major strides, and this could be his moment to prove himself.

Brown will have to duke it out with freshmen Xavier Henderson, Kalon Gervin and Christian Jackson. All three of those guys add to a loaded backfield and will almost surely get some reps with the ones.

If I were to venture a guess right now as to who would replace Scott to start the season, it would be Butler, followed by Brown and then Gervin and Henderson would get plenty of reps. Luckily Scott should be back in early October if this trial period doesn’t go well — although the talent is there and everything should work out just fine.
