Michigan State football has the second-most “elite” wins in the Big Ten over the past five years, according to a recent report from College Football News.

Throughout the Mark Dantonio era, there have been numerous memorable games that have caught the attention of college football. Michigan State has been lucky enough to be included in some of the best games in the nation each year and they haven’t gone unnoticed.

In fact, the Spartans have the second-most “elite” wins, according to a report done by College Football News.

What constitutes an elite win?

"In the CFN Five-Year Program Analysis, an Elite Win is a victory over an FBS team that finished with two losses or fewer, or on the road or in a bowl game against a team that lost three games. An extra 0.5 is added on to the Elite Win score when a team comes up with a road victory over a team that finished with two losses or fewer."

Well, Michigan State has to have a few of those, right? A few games come to mind such as wins at Michigan and Ohio State as well as a victory over Stanford in the Rose Bowl.

Where does Michigan State stand, in terms of Big Ten teams, in elite wins over the past five years?

  1. Ohio State: 12
  2. Michigan State: 8
  3. Penn State: 4
  4. Iowa: 3
  5. Wisconsin: 2.5
  6. Indiana: 2
  7. Nebraska, Northwestern: 1
  8. Michigan, Maryland, Rutgers, Purdue, Illinois, Minnesota: 0

The Spartans have the second-most elite wins in the conference over the past five years, trailing only the Buckeyes, which is no surprise.

Even more impressive is the fact that Michigan State trails only Ohio State, Clemson and Oklahoma in college football — the Spartans are tied with Alabama.
