Kicking off the 2016 class with a surprise commitment, Cam Chambers was looked at as an immediate leader. He had the look and feel of a kid who was ready to set an example and he did lead, helping recruit some top stars to the Spartans’ 2016 class, and he stayed loyal the entire time despite three other four-star receivers committing.

Two years later, Trishton Jackson has transferred, Donnie Corley got into trouble off the field which got him booted from the team and Justin Layne switched to cornerback.

Yes, Chambers is the lone four-star receiver from that class still in the corps. It’s hard to believe, but it’s also a good sign that the redshirt sophomore could be in for a breakout season, knowing he finally has a shot to stand out and become that leader everyone expected him to be.

After a strong spring game, it looks like he’s ready to build on that five-catch, 66-yard performance that he pieced together in 2017.

Chambers was a rumored transfer possibility this offseason, but he’s stuck it out and it looks like he’s ready to make that one-year jump MSU receivers often do — like Tony Lippett, Aaron Burbridge, Felton Davis III, Darrell Stewart Jr.
