The last time a quarterback was named captain was 2016 with Tyler O’Connor, but that one didn’t quite work out as well as some would have hoped. He struggled with confidence all season long and couldn’t do much to help the Spartans crawl out of a 3-9 hole.

Before that, Andrew Maxwell was the previous quarterback named captain, and that, too, didn’t go well for the Spartans. He was a solid kid, but he never lived up to the hype and was eventually benched in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl for Connor Cook and he never looked back.

The last successful Michigan State quarterback who was also a captain was Kirk Cousins back in 2011. He was a three-year captain and one of the best leaders in Spartan history. Could Brian Lewerke follow that lead?

No, Lewerke can’t be a three-year captain, but he can be a multi-year captain like Cousins. He also has the talent level of Cousins and there are some who believe he could be Mark Dantonio’s best quarterback yet.

Lewerke is vocal, respectful and a true role model for his teammates as well as younger fans. He’s the epitome of a strong captain candidate.
