Michigan State football has finished up spring ball and is now facing some important storylines before the 2018 season kicks off.

The kickoff of the 2018 season can’t come soon enough. Michigan State football faces plenty of questions this offseason, but a few of them were answered in spring ball.

Michigan State finished out the spring, at least in the public eye, with the green and white scrimmage and even though it was played in poor weather, there were some highlights, such as a Darrell Stewart Jr. breakout performance and Brian Lewerke’s increased confidence.

Mark Dantonio has to feel good about his squad entering the 2018 campaign — returning 19 starters has to help.

Still, there’s no shortage of important storyline facing the Spartans heading into next season regarding some of their star players.

What’re the five biggest storylines for Michigan State following spring ball?

5. Offensive line consistency

The offensive line was one of few ‘weaknesses’ in 2017, if you can even call it that. The Spartans had a strong unit, on paper, but it never truly seemed to open the right holes in the run game.

Brian Lewerke wasn’t rushed much, especially later in the season as the unit gelled, but LJ Scott, Madre London and Gerald Holmes weren’t able to pick up many big chunks on the ground. Sure, there were exceptions to that, such as the Minnesota and Washington State wins, but the Spartans didn’t have a consistent season up front.

It was tough to tell in the spring game if the line was ready for more consistency, but that’s something the Spartans will be working on all offseason. This line needs more consistency and the leaders up front such as Cole Chewins, David Beedle, Luke Campbell, Tyler Higby and Kevin Jarvis need to set the right example.

Depth pieces such as Jordan Reid, Mustafa Khaleefah and Matt Allen should help matters.
