After waiting for a short time after the NFL draft for that phone call, Michigan State running back Gerald Holmes will be getting a shot with the Colts.

Gerald Holmes hasn’t had the easiest road to the NFL, but all the hard work and long hours have finally paid off as he’s getting a tryout with the Indianapolis Colts.

Although he didn’t receive that call on draft day, he patiently waited and finally heard from the Colts who invited him to rookie camp which started on Friday.

The four-year player came to Michigan State from Flint and produced almost immediately. He had just 44 yards as a freshman but broke out with 540 yards and eight touchdowns as a sophomore. His role would never truly increase as his touches decreased from his sophomore to his senior year.

As a junior and senior, he had 164 total carries for 716 yards and six touchdowns. He had the potential to be a breakout star in the backfield, but LJ Scott’s emergence as well as splitting time with Madre London axed that plan.

Holmes was always a great leader for the Spartans, though, as the younger players looked up to him — he led by example.

The Colts don’t have great running back depth behind Marlon Mack, so if Holmes is able to showcase his power and elusiveness with that 6-1, 230-pound frame, expect him to get a serious look from the coaching staff.
