Chris Frey didn’t have a huge season in 2017, but the senior captain led Michigan State to 10 wins and earned himself a deal with the Panthers.

Michigan State extended its consecutive NFL draft pick streak to 78 years as Brian Allen was selected in the fourth round, No. 111 overall, on Saturday afternoon. However, there was another Spartan who inked a deal with a team, living out his NFL dream, who had flown under the radar.

Chris Frey came to Michigan State as a three-star prospect, even rated a four-star by 247Sports, and he played with a chip on his shoulder throughout his career. That has led to him signing as an undrafted free agent with the Carolina Panthers.

Although he began his career as mostly a special teams guy, he racked up 96 total tackles as a junior before seeing his numbers dip as a senior, recording 55 tackles. Despite the decrease in production, he’s worked hard in the offseason to earn a spot on an NFL roster heading into the offseason and preseason camp.

This move for Frey to the Panthers was a dream come true and something he’d been working on since day one.

Not many players work harder than Frey who went from special teams star as a freshman to captain as a senior. His progression was a fun one to watch and his leadership will be missed at Michigan State.
