By Stephen Robb
Michigan State received a double surprise when Jacob and Zachary Slade committed last summer. Here is what Spartan fans can expect from the latter.
Michigan State likes to treat its recruits like family, and that’s exactly what happened when the Slade brothers committed last summer. Zachary Slade, at 6-foot-4 and 240 pounds, possesses a high motor and a persistent pursuit ability and does not want to give up on a play.

Slade is a three-star Ohio product from Lewis Center who reminds me a little bit of Kyler Elsworth, the Spartans’ Rose Bowl hero from 2013. He’s that type of player who a coach can ask to do anything and he will. Elsworth played some defensive end, special teams and even linebacker for the Spartans, coming up huge on the biggest stage.
The incoming freshman is a great tackler and a hard worker who is going to provide excellent depth along the defensive line and could even end up as a defensive tackle.
Although he’ll need to add some weight. He plays quick but is not necessarily fast. He is the type of player who is not going to take a play off and he’ll leave it all on the field.

After watching his film, Slade is the quintessential Mark Dantonio player. He is that bring your lunch pail type, which is what has brought the Spartans much success. He is an overlooked recruit because MSU was his only Power Five scholarship offer. The Spartans are getting another gem in Slade given his low recruiting rankings.
