During Michigan State’s annual spring game, a handful of breakout candidates separated themselves. Which Spartans could break out in 2018?

Although fans didn’t exactly come out in droves for Saturday’s spring game due to the inclement weather and frigid temperatures, many watched the Spartans one TV and got a good idea of the type of team returning in 2018.

Michigan State returns 19 starters and looks like one of the best college football teams in the land heading into the summer months. They showed off some defensive prowess and improvements on the offensive side of the ball even with a number of starters sitting out. There were some under-the-radar breakout candidates who rose to the surface, too.

Which five Spartans stood out as breakout candidates during the spring game?

When Noah Harvey de-committed from Bowling Green and committed to Michigan State in the 2017 class, there were many skeptics, myself included. Not many big-time programs would try to flip a MAC commit, but the Spartans saw something in him.

Apparently that something was Chris Frey 2.0. He looked solid all scrimmage long, looking like a solid rotational piece in the linebacking corps. He got plenty of pressure on the quarterbacks and there’s a good chance we could see him extensively on special teams this season — that’s how Frey got his start in East Lansing.

Harvey looks like the next breakout linebacker who no one really talked about out of high school. The former three-star recruit is out to prove people wrong and he did just that on Saturday by flying around to the ball.
