Michigan State football is entering the 2018 spring game with high expectations, but what are the five biggest questions the Spartans must answer?

It’s been a relatively quiet offseason for Michigan State thus far but the annual spring game will be a good indicator of how successful the Spartans will be in 2018.

Expectations are extremely high for the Spartans heading into the 2018 season and that’s because of the youth of the team returning from the 10-3 squad in 2017. Michigan State beat teams like Michigan and Penn State in conference play and took down Washington State in the Holiday Bowl. This team is riding some extreme confidence.

Just because the Spartans are confident doesn’t mean that they don’t still have questions to answer this spring.

What are the five biggest questions facing the Spartans this spring?

5. Who replaces Chris Frey?

Chris Frey was one of the more productive defensive players on that 2017 team and he became one of the best leaders for the Spartans. He was a driving force in the complete turnaround from the disaster that was 2016.

However, the Spartans will be looking for a replacement at SAM linebacker and the early favorites are Brandon Randle and Tyriq Thompson. Antjuan Simmons was a name that popped up a lot at the end of last season as a potential replacement for Frey, but it looks like his future may be at STAR linebacker when Andrew Dowell graduates.

The battle will be between Randle and Thompson this spring and it’s really one that Michigan State can’t lose out on. Both guys bring a different aspect to the game but both are athletic guys who can provide a nice rush on opposing quarterbacks.

Keep an eye on that SAM linebacker battle.
