What does Michigan State basketball have to do in order to make a deep run in the 2018 NCAA Tournament? Here are five keys to a Final Four run.

Prior to the 2017-18 season, Michigan State fans were holding a ‘national championship or bust’ mindset. The same could be said for the players and coaches as Miles Bridges made the decision to come back and help lead his team to the promised land.

That hasn’t changed despite the recent loss to Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament. Many were quick to hit the panic button and jump off the bandwagon, but this team is 29-4 and still controls its own destiny in a tough Midwest Region.

Let’s take a look at some of the most important keys for a Final Four run.

5. Spartans must protect the ball

Averaging 13 turnovers per game throughout the regular season has put a damper on the tournament outlook, in some experts’ minds. They believe that the Spartans just play too sloppy to be considered a favorite in the tournament.

Although the talent is undeniable and the potential is sky-high, Michigan State just plays erratic basketball which causes problems on the offensive side of the ball. When a team turns the ball over 15-20 times per game, there a good chance they are’t going to come out on top.

Michigan State must clean up the silly mistakes, value each possession equally and make smart passes and decisions throughout the tournament in order to make a deep run.

A Spartan team that averages less than 10 turnovers per game in the Big Dance would be cutting down the nets in San Antonio.
