Jack Camper has made the switch from tight end to defensive end for Michigan State football this spring and he could be special at the new position.

Jack Camper is a 6-foot-6, 230-pound redshirt freshman for the Spartans out of Bradenton, Fla., and went to the prestigious IMG Academy. Michigan State recruited him to play tight end, but the film I watched on him over a year ago had him excelling more as a defensive end. I wrote then that I thought he might end up at defensive end and, sure enough, he finally made the move.

Camper has the size and burst off the line that the Spartans need from that position. Personally, I would not be surprised if he is pushing for playing time by August. All one has to do is watch him on film and you come away with a similar conclusion. He is not just using his speed, but also has some moves to blow by opposing offensive tackles.

There was one play where you could watch Camper hold the offensive lineman in order to get an idea if the quarterback would run or pass. Camper made his deduction and stormed in and got the sack. It was a heady play and one you typically do not see in these highlights.

The talent and football IQ are there but now it’s a matter of him getting up to speed on the defensive side.
