Michigan State football took down Michigan in upset fashion over the weekend. Here are five overreactions to the victory.

Do you believe in miracles? Two years ago, Michigan State football won on a miracle and the Spartans were trying to live it down as the victory was discredited because of a “fluke” play.  On Saturday, Michigan State beat the Wolverines and there were no excuses this time.

Michigan State out-played, out-coached and out-smarted the Wolverines on their own turf in Ann Arbor and came away with a gritty 14-10 victory. The win improved the Spartans to 4-1 on the season and shot them up to No. 21 in the AP rankings.

There have been plenty of overreactions from the win, but here are the five most extreme.

5. Run game is hopeless

Another game in the books with little to no run game to speak of. The Spartans finished with 158 rushing yards on 4.0 per carry, but a lot of the success was from the legs of Brian Lewerke. However, the run game isn’t quite as hopeless as some fans would lead you to believe.

Just look at the numbers. Heading into the game, Michigan had the best run defense in the country  and the Spartans still managed to double the usual output the Wolverines allow on the ground. That should show some progress for the Spartans.

Moreover, there were some open holes in the first half that allowed decent runs from Gerald Holmes and Madre London. The latter had a nice 50-yard run that set the Spartans up nicely deep in Michigan territory.

Oh yeah, and the Spartans did all of this without top running back LJ Scott. Racking up over 150 yards on the ground in the Big House against the No. 1 run defense in the country without your top running back? I’d say progress was made.
