After being one of the last additions to Michigan State football’s 2017 class, Laress Nelson is impressing in the return game.

Laress Nelson was a late addition to the class of 2017, however, he is already impressing his quarterback, Brian Lewerke.

While watching BTN Live‘s episode on the Spartans. Brian Lewerke was asked about what wide receivers stood out to him. He listed many who were expected like Cody White, Trishton Jackson and Cameron Chambers. Then he added Nelson’s name. I was surprised and therefore decided I should review his film again.

Nelson is a speedy, shifty wide receiver from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He played at American Heritage High School, which is a powerhouse program in a competitive league.

Wide receivers coach Terrance Samuel regards Nelson as a “make you miss in space” player. Samuel also states that Nelson is similar to former Spartan MacGarrett Kings in that he “snatches the ball out of the air.” When you watch his highlight film you immediately witness the speed he cruises by defenders with.

During one play he catches the pigskin with ease and then splits two defenders who have excellent angles. Nelson plays aggressive and big in the slot, even though he is shorter at 5-foot-11.

Michigan State will most likely use him on jet sweeps and bubble screens. He also competing for a chance to play early on punt/kickoff return. The Spartans could use his speed and ability because their return game has been sorely missing the past few seasons.
