Michigan State football freshman quarterback Messiah deWeaver showed off his rocket arm during a recent workout.

Michigan State football coach Mark Dantonio may soon have a good problem on his hands. I know what you’re thinking, the last thing he needs is more problems, but this is a good one — I promise.

While sophomore quarterback Brian Lewerke has already been named the team’s starter, he may have someone pushing him along the way.

Last season was a far cry from what Michigan State fans were used to when it comes to quarterbacks producing, but that issue may just be in the past only. Messiah deWeaver, although he missed most of spring, seems to be a logical choice for the team’s backup.

The former four-star quarterback from Ohio was regarded as a potential threat to compete for the starting job in 2017, but his injuries forced him to lose some ground. He may soon be regaining some of that this summer and into fall.

That’s a great attitude to have. Always end the workout with a deep ball toss. Cam Chambers, an up-and-coming redshirt freshman receiver, was on the receiving end of that near 50-yard bomb. If those two can develop a connection, the Spartans could have a nice replacement for when Lewerke graduates or in the case of an injury.

The future is bright in East Lansing and deWeaver isn’t ready to let the starting job escape his grasp — at least he’s setting himself up as the No. 2 quarterback right now.
