Former Michigan State football safety Demetrious Cox has signed as an undrafted free agent with the Bengals.

Not finishing his Michigan State football career the way he imagined, Demetrious Cox entered the NFL Draft, hoping for some late-round magic. However, he went undrafted but was picked up shortly after the final round by the Cincinnati Bengals.

Cox came to Michigan State as a highly-regarded defensive back from Jeannette, Penn., and was redshirted in 2012. He played a total of 27 games in 2013 and 2014, but a lot of it was on special teams and as a rotational player in the defensive backfield.

The former four-star safety then got his shot as a junior in 2015, starting 14 games and finishing with 77 tackles and three interceptions. However, the Spartans’ defensive backfield took a step back and Cox struggled in coverage. He switched back and forth from safety and cornerback to fill in for injured players and that messed with his confidence.

Now he will be joining the Bengals as an undrafted free agent and he will be looking to learn from a former Spartan defensive back legend, Darqueze Dennard. The two were teammates during Cox’s first two years and it’s a good situation for the rookie.

While it’s unlikely he makes the 53-man roster unless he completely fixes his coverage issues and techniques, Cox might find a spot on the practice squad with a chance to make a push for the 53-man roster down the line.
