Reports surfaced on Thursday afternoon about Michigan State basketball assistant Dane Fife potentially taking the Duquesne job.

Rumors were flying on Thursday afternoon as Michigan State basketball assistant Dane Fife was reportedly close to a deal with Duquesne to take over as head coach. That loss would have been huge for Tom Izzo, but he would have supported Fife’s decision.

However, it seems as if Fife has decided to stay with the Spartans — for now. According to Jeff Goodman of ESPN, Fife has decided to turn down the Duquesne job and remain with Michigan State.

While this is good news for the Spartans right now, it’s not something they should get used to. Fife has been a hot commodity in coaching searches and his name has popped up quite a bit and is even being tied to the Indiana job. The Hoosiers would love to have him, despite the short resume, seeing as he’s a former Indiana player.

In fact, Fife played for the Hoosiers from 1998-2002 and was the starting point guard on the national runner-up team during his senior season. He’s also the Hoosiers’ all-time steals leader. He served as an assistant coach under Mike Davis at Indiana for two years before getting the job at IPFW.

The former Hoosier turned IPFW into a winning program, going 10-18 in his first season and leaving after year six with an 18-12 record. He chose the Michigan State job over Purdue. He may not have a proven track record, but he is going to land a big job soon enough.
