Michigan State Football: Post-spring 2-deep depth chart projections for 2022
Running Back
Starting running back: Jalen Berger
Backup: Jarek Broussard
The running back position figures to be rather loaded heading into the season, assuming no one else transfers out. Jalen Berger comes over from Wisconsin as a former four-star prospect. He had 301 yards and two touchdowns on 60 carries in his freshman season back in 2020 and it was kind of expected that he’d be the lead back moving forward. That didn’t quite happen.
Berger was dismissed from the program and Mel Tucker acted quickly to scoop him up last fall in time for spring ball. He enrolled early and will do his best to replace Kenneth Walker III.
But adequately replacing the best running back in the country won’t be a solo mission. Berger will be joined by former Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year Jarek Broussard from Colorado. He is my pick for the backup spot just because Berger has already been with the team all semester. Broussard, though, reminds me a little of Walker.
Those two will make up a dynamic 1-2 punch.
As for the other backs, Elijah Collins will be back to be the third rusher and Jordon Simmons, Davion Primm, and Harold Joiner will be in the mix as well. Primm was tabbed as a breakout performer this spring by the staff.
