Chester Kimbrough was a pleasant surprise to me this spring. He struggled mightily last season, with a fair share of the big passing plays occurring against the Spartans occurring with him as the primary coverage. It wasn’t all gloom for the New Orleans native, as Kimbrough showed his potential when he saved the game and arguably the Spartan season, picking off Nebraska’s Adrian Martinez in overtime.

The staff decided to move Kimbrough inside this spring, and it appears that this move will pay dividends.

Kimbrough has spent a season working with this defense and learning the system. As a result, he was active on Saturday, attacking the ball and making pass breakups routinely. He was also not afraid to tackle, taking down both Davion Primm and Elijah Collins in the open field at points. Kimbrough struggled with the outside receivers last season and moving against the smaller players with more of a focus on tackling should help.

Would I buy this stock?

I’d wait on it. Kimbrough is making steps in the right direction to contribute a lot to this defense, but he was still caught being very handsy at points that could be called in a regular-season game.

If Kimbrough takes the role with the Spartans that Darius Snow had last year, he should look to benefit. After the season the pass defense and Kimbrough had last year, any positive contribution will be appreciated to help turn this defense back into the “No Fly Zone.”
