1. Payton Thorne

When Mel Tucker was still sorting out his quarterback battle, did anyone think whoever he chose was going to look this good?

Payton Thorne has been nothing short of spectacular through three games. He has thrown for over 700 yards with nine touchdown passes and no interceptions. And for a second straight game, he has thrown four touchdown passes — that’s the first time that feat has happened since Connor Cook was in East Lansing.

The sophomore quarterback was accurate, impressive, and calm in the hottest of heat in Miami when pressure was at its highest.

He completed 18-of-31 passes for 261 yards and four touchdowns. He also had a huge 22-yard rush in the fourth quarter that helped the Spartans keep a crucial drive alive.

And then there was this gem that put the game away for good, taking a shot and throwing a dime to Jalen Nailor for a 39-yard score.

Thorne is the perfect guy for the job and Michigan State has to feel comfortable that he’s leading the way. The Spartans are in good hands.
