Michigan State Football: 3 hot takes from blowout of Youngstown State
1. Mel Tucker’s rebuild is ahead of schedule
I’ll be the first to admit, I thought Mel Tucker would need 3-4 years to get Michigan State football back in the conversation in the Big Ten East. He took over a program that lacked talent at most positions and it was coming off back-to-back seven-win seasons. The Spartans were in a bad place and a lot of fans knew that but didn’t want to admit it.
The Spartans are now 2-0 with back-to-back blowout wins over Northwestern and Youngstown State and while those opponents aren’t exactly world-beaters, the preparation this team has made for both has been impressive. The Spartans were ready for each game and built big leads and set the tone early with 75-yard touchdowns on the first play of each.
Being prepared like that is something we haven’t seen since the prime Mark Dantonio years and now Michigan State is on the verge of being ranked in the AP Top 25 and a win over Miami would truly open some eyes.
If Michigan State beats Miami on the road on Saturday afternoon, there’s a good chance the Spartans are 7-0 or 6-1 when they see Michigan on Oct. 30.
Tucker’s rebuild is ahead of schedule and the culture has been changed.
