The quarterback position

Probably the biggest question mark for Michigan State is who will be under center when the Spartans take the field. Brian Lewerke leaves East Lansing as one of the most polarizing, yet no doubt one of the most talented quarterbacks in recent memory.

Who will be Brian Lewerke’s replacement is anything but certain. Rocky Lombardi is the most experienced signal-caller on the roster, but he might not be the most talented. Sophomores Theo Day and Payton Thorne are expected to compete for the starting job as well, and it wouldn’t be the most surprising thing to see freshman Noah Kim take snaps as well.

The competition should be open, as we have not seen enough convincing Lombardi tape to be certain that he should be the starter Week 1, let alone the entire shortened season. Whoever begins the season as the starting quarterback may not finish the season as the starter.
