5. Michigan State splits Ohio State, Michigan

Everyone who is doing season predictions for Michigan State seems to have one thing in common: they have the Spartans losing to both Ohio State and Michigan.

From national pundits to local beat guys, the Michigan and Ohio State games seem to be locked in as guaranteed losses for the Spartans. While the same people might be predicting 10-win seasons with an unscathed trek through the Big Ten and non-conference play outside of those two East contenders, it still seems a bit shocking that no one is picking MSU.

So I’ll do it.

Michigan State is not going to win both games. It just won’t happen. Barring some type of breakout season in which the Spartans dominate just about everyone and happen to be the best team Mark Dantonio has ever coached, Michigan State will not beat both Michigan and Ohio State. But they will split.

In my game-by-game predictions, I had the Spartans losing both, but since it’s time to be bold and optimism is running high right before the season, I’m going to say Michigan State goes on the road to beat either Michigan or Ohio State.

The Wolverines are the favorite to win the conference, but the Spartans haven’t lost in Ann Arbor since 2012. The Buckeyes, on the other hand, lost plenty from a Big Ten title team a year ago, including All-Big Ten passer Dwayne Haskins and head coach Urban Meyer.

Michigan State will hit the road and steal a win from one of these division rivals.
