NBA Draft 2016: Matt Costello working out with Jazz

Former Michigan State big man Matt Costello has a pre-draft workout with the Utah Jazz Thursday.

Matt Costello is one of four Spartans looking to get selected in the 2016 NBA Draft, but he’s going to have to work an uphill battle to hear his name called in June. He is, however, getting some pre-draft workouts in, including Thursday with the Utah Jazz.

Not being invited to the NBA combine is a big reason to accept as many pre-draft workouts as possible. This is where the uphill battle of being drafted begins.

Costello and Bryn Forbes are two guys who are likely on the outside of the draft process looking in as neither were invited to the combine. For Costello, it’ll be more difficult to find a niche with a team since he can’t exactly be a solid four in the NBA. He’s 6-foot-9, 245 pounds so he would be on the smaller end of power forwards and he doesn’t have a jumper for the three.

Utah is in the process of building a young team and the organization will be looking for more big guys to play alongside Rudy Gobert and Derrick Favors. Costello averaged 10.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per game during his final season in the green and white, proving he could be more physical than he was in the previous three years.

If Matt Costello can prove to be more athletic than he projects in the NBA and develops a mid-range jumper, we could see him potentially making a team after the Summer League is over.

As for the NBA Draft, it’s not looking likely he hears his name called.
