3. Chris L. Rucker pick/Larry Caper TD

I’ve been very impartial toward plays during the Dantonio era because that’s when the most memorable ones seemed to have happened, especially for young whippersnappers like myself who were born just one year after the Spartans took down No. 1 Michigan in Ann Arbor.

This one had to be the least credited, by a long shot.

Michigan State looked to pick up its first back-to-back win streak since 1965-67 and it took overtime, but the Spartans finally put the Wolverines away after a nifty Larry Caper run in which he broke a couple of tackles and turned an average 5-to-6 yard carry into a game-winning score.

There’ probably no better feeling in the world than to score on the final play of the game and not have to kick the extra point. We all know how exciting walkoffs are in baseball, but for football, they’re so rare that they are also coveted and celebrated wildly.

It’s crazy to think that Caper was just a freshman here.

Also, we cannot forget the fact that Chris L. Rucker picked the pass off after a beautiful, planned tip by his teammate, diving and making the interception on the first drive in overtime, handing the ball to the offense.

Caper didn’t waste much time, dashing to the end zone and becoming a campus-wide legend in his first month as a collegiate student.
