Michigan State basketball extended an offer to the top prospect in the nation in future five-star Emoni Bates from Ypsilanti.

Emoni Bates has been in the Spartan locker room, around East Lansing and with the team for the past couple of years and that relationship might pay off for Michigan State.

It took a little longer than expected, but Tom Izzo offered the future five-star prospect and No. 1 player in the 2022 class a Michigan State scholarship.

Right now, his recruitment has been quiet but it’s going to pick up soon, especially after his strong freshman season and lofty comparisons he’s been drawing. Some have dubbed the 6-8, 200-pound small forward the best high school prospect since LeBron James and others have likened him to Kevin Durant, but soon scholarship offers may not matter.

Though Bates has grown up liking the Spartans and being a fan, he may never step foot on campus as a student because there’s a strong belief that he will be the end of the one-and-done rule.

The NBA is seriously considering getting rid of the rule and allowing high school prospects enter the draft. If that’s the case, there’s a strong possibility that he’ll be the No. 1 player chosen whenever he does declare, leaving coaches like Izzo and John Calipari pondering “what if?” scenarios.

Bates may be the best high school prospect of the past decade, or so, and a generational talent, and seeing him in the green and white would have to be a major goal for Izzo. You know he’s hoping to retain that one-and-done rule at least until 2023 so he can come out on top of the Bates sweepstakes.
