Michigan State basketball made the top five of four-star power forward Malik Hall last weekend, but what are the Spartans’ chances to land him?

It didn’t take long after receiving his offer, but four-star power forward Malik Hall trimmed his list of potential suitors to five, naming Michigan State among the final group.

The Spartans offered Hall back on Aug. 14 during an unofficial visit and the senior prospect cut his list to five just four days later. He named Michigan State, Purdue, Texas, Oklahoma and Oregon.

Once ranked in the 100-range nationally, Hall received quite the bump in recent weeks thanks to the increase in interest surrounding him. He was no longer a little-known recruit, but rather one of the top prospects in the country from Sunrise Christian in Wichita, Kan. — yes, that’s the same high school that Marvin Clark Jr. and Tum Tum Nairn attended.

Hall is now listed as the No. 58 prospect in the land and second-best Kansas recruit, according to the 247Sports composite. He’s also the 13th-best power forward in the 2019 class.

Could the Spartans land Hall and end the shutout that’s happening to their 2019 cycle?

This offer to Hall from Michigan State was clearly an important one and maybe the one he was waiting for before he decided to cut his list, but the Spartans still have some ground to make up.

Purdue seems like one of the teams to beat, along with Texas, but Michigan State may be third in the race with a decent shot if it can get him on campus for another visit. If I had to put a number on it, I’d say the Spartans have a 20 percent shot to land him while Purdue and Texas are tied for the lead.

Tom Izzo would love a kid like Hall who may be on the thinner side at 6-7, 190 pounds, but can handle the ball as a forward, drive to the hoop or even play with his back to the basket. This kid’s recruitment has blown up, but the Spartans are right in the thick of it.
