Michigan State recruiting is looking to close its 2017 basketball class strongly, but is four-star point guard Tremont Waters an option?

The beauty of recruiting is that it’s not just the coaches that get into the action. For Michigan State recruiting, it’s the players as well. In fact, Miles Bridges admitted he’d been doing some recruiting of his own since deciding to come back and now Jaren Jackson Jr. is doing the same.

The five-star signee in the 2017 class appeared on The Spartan Beat Thursday, speaking with Rivals‘ Rico Beard. He talked about his past few weeks as well as urged Spartan fans to flood four-star point guard Tremont Waters’ mentions with “Go Green.”

Some had never even heard the name, but Jackson Jr. made it seem like the staff might be pursuing him as a backup option in case the Spartans don’t land Mark Smith.

So is Waters truly an option for 2017? If I were a betting man, I’d say that Tom Izzo is probably keeping in contact, but Waters is likely headed elsewhere. While Jackson Jr. wants to have his friend pick the Spartans, he doesn’t play a position of need.

You might be saying, “But Mark Smith is a point guard, too.” While that is true, on paper, he’s being recruited as more of a two or three. The Spartans will be set on point guards for years to come. It never hurts to add depth, though.

Waters could be an option, but don’t hold your breath. He’s ranked the No. 40 recruit in the 2017 class as well as the 10th-best point guard, according to the 247Sports’ composite. He reigns from New Haven, Conn.
