Michigan State Recruiting is showing interest in four-star 2017 point guard Mark Smith from Illinois.

While it looks like Michigan State recruiting’s 2017 class is about to be sewn up, a new target has popped up for Tom Izzo and the Spartans. Mark Smith, a senior guard from Edwardsville, Ill., is apparently hearing from Michigan State and the Spartans are trying to come see him.

Why is this the first time his name has popped up on the radar? Well, he seems like a fairly underrated recruit from Illinois and has the skill set to be an instant contributor at the collegiate level. He was also named Mr. Basketball in the state of Illinois.

Did you love what Denzel Valentine and Draymond Green brought to the table in a Michigan State uniform? Well, Smith might not be too much different. In fact, the 6-foot-5, 225-pound guard can do it all. He can shoot, pass, slash to the basket to create his own show, draw fouls, rebound and defend.

Smith isn’t your typical guard, though. He’s a bulky kid who isn’t afraid of contact. Izzo loves guys who can get to the basket and draw fouls, but Smith is someone who can finish with and-ones more often than not. He also has great court vision.

The Spartans are the latest team to contact him and he would be an excellent addition to the 2017 class and would project more as a two-guard. Both Nebraska and Ohio State offered him last month and he holds scholarships from Illinois and Indiana as well. He’s ranked the No. 102 overall recruit in the 2017 class.
